Braised Onion Sauce For Pasta

1/2 lb butter
1 tablespoon sugar
1 1/2 lb onions, peeled, sliced
1/4 cup madeira grated cheese
Saute onions in butter. Stir in sugar, lower heat and cook very slowly one hour. Stir in the wine, cook briefly, and pour over a pound of freshly cooked pasta. Pass the Parmesan.
