Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup strawberry puree (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 cups heavy cream (for frosting)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease three 8-inch round cake pans with butter and dust with flour.
  2. In a bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (3-5 minutes).
  4. Add eggs one at a time to the butter-sugar mixture while mixing continuously. Pour in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually mix in dry ingredients alternately with milk until just combined.
  6. Prepare strawberry puree by blending strawberries until smooth.
  7. Divide batter evenly among the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  8. Cool layers for about 10 minutes in pans before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. Whip heavy cream until soft peaks form; gradually add powdered sugar until fully blended.
  10. Layer the cooled cakes with strawberry puree between each layer; frost the entire cake with whipped cream frosting and decorate with chocolate chips or fresh strawberries.
