  • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey (preferably raw)
  • 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger, Chinese five spice powder, and sesame oil.
  2. Add chicken thighs to the marinade, ensuring they are fully coated. Marinate for at least 30 minutes or preferably overnight.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) or heat your grill.
  4. If desired, sear each thigh skin-side down in a skillet over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Place marinated chicken on a lined baking tray or directly on the grill grates. Bake or grill for about 25-30 minutes until fully cooked and caramelized (internal temperature should reach 165°F/75°C).
  6. Brush with reserved marinade during the last few minutes of cooking for extra flavor.
  7. Garnish with chopped green onions before serving.
